Here are some stills from my new film ‘Home‘ which I’ve made during my first year at the Royal College of Art. It’s pretty different to the work I’ve produced before and as mentioned in the previous post, a trailer will be online for y’all to sink your teeth into very, very soon.

Weekend Outside

The film is pretty much finished, just a few little things to be done here and there, should all be done by next week. I’ll make a trailer and post it as soon as possible. In the meantime I took this weekend to finally go outside and see London a bit more. I did a load of drawings at various locations – Trafalgar Square, Southbank, Hyde Park, the top of a double decker bus whilst drunk….you get the idea. So here’s a few (Well…quite a few).

Work in Progress Show

At the beginning of the month, Animation and some other departments at the RCA had a Work in Progress show that ran for a week. As well as animation, there was all kinds of other stuff on display from stop motion models to handmade books. I set up this life drawing installation in which I invited my classmates to animate their own life drawing model on a boil, which I then put in a sequence and projected them onto a wall. I set up an easel and some pencil and paper, inviting the visitors to come and draw the model and then display the result on a wall….my attempt at conceptual art….I did it as a sort of homage to the life drawing classes which quite a few of us attended quite regularly in the first term. Anyway, it seemed to take off and loads of people hung up their drawings, not just of the models but of their friends and from their imagination…I’ve now got a stack of strangers drawings, I might scan them in and put them up. Below are some pictures of the installation taken by my friend Josh Armitage and RCA photographer Dominic Tschudin

I’m about to start making my first year film this week….I see long nights animating til the early hours of the morning awaiting me. That feeling you get when you start hearing the birds sing and you realise it’s time you went to bed. I’ll stick some pictures of it on here at some point. In the meantime there’s a work in progress show on at the RCA, a collection of stuff from my course and some others from the school of design. It’s on until the 6th of Feb so do check it out.

Happy new year!

I’ve been spending the last couple of days working on ideas for my first year film – I’d forgotten how hard it can be sometimes to find an idea that I really like – obviously it’s part of the process and through all the notes and scribbles and swearing and frustration you eventually get there.

So to help loosen me up, I had a little play in After Effects and Photoshop and made this little thing, which was really fun to do -

It’s really, really loosely based on a Welsh story about Caradog ap Bran who was the king of Britain. I saw a play about him when I was in primary school called ‘Caradog the Celt’ and he was ginger and it was all in Welsh, being back home in Wales over Christmas reminded me of that.

I’ve also gotten into doing warm up drawings in the mornings (I can’t believe I’d never done this before) I find it a good way to clear your head of all the clutter and make room for ideas to grow. It’s also a good way to just get something down without being precious about it or feel intimidated by blank pages. Here’s one from today -

I’ve started using colour a lot more and I’m becoming more comfortable with it. Hooray! I’m actually starting to find it weird when I just do line drawings in black. It’s quite fun to just draw a few blobs of colour and then fill in the rest with different shades….
