Happy new year!
I’ve been spending the last couple of days working on ideas for my first year film – I’d forgotten how hard it can be sometimes to find an idea that I really like – obviously it’s part of the process and through all the notes and scribbles and swearing and frustration you eventually get there.
So to help loosen me up, I had a little play in After Effects and Photoshop and made this little thing, which was really fun to do –
It’s really, really loosely based on a Welsh story about Caradog ap Bran who was the king of Britain. I saw a play about him when I was in primary school called ‘Caradog the Celt’ and he was ginger and it was all in Welsh, being back home in Wales over Christmas reminded me of that.
I’ve also gotten into doing warm up drawings in the mornings (I can’t believe I’d never done this before) I find it a good way to clear your head of all the clutter and make room for ideas to grow. It’s also a good way to just get something down without being precious about it or feel intimidated by blank pages. Here’s one from today –
I’ve started using colour a lot more and I’m becoming more comfortable with it. Hooray! I’m actually starting to find it weird when I just do line drawings in black. It’s quite fun to just draw a few blobs of colour and then fill in the rest with different shades….
The title says it, here’s a selection –
Seasons Greetings, I haven’t posted on here for two months…wow, that’s the longest I’ve gone without posting in over two years…Anyway, I’ve been busy with my MA and now I’m back in Wales for Christmas. Here’s some new work I’ve made during my first term
I made this film as part of a rhythmanalysis project. It’s the first proper abstract film I’ve made and I really enjoyed it. There’s something relaxing about not planning stuff and doing it all straight ahead without worrying about the next scene/movement etc…I also got to use lots of colour which is something I’ve never been comfortable with but since starting the MA I’m getting more into it.
I’m currently working on development of my first year film but I’ll try and post more often in the new year (or maybe before)

I got an email today from Italy….A guy called Maurizio Failla brought my one page comic Tape Boy (which I posted on here a few months back) to life with his live action adaptation which you can see below. It’s really bizarre, but pretty cool at the same time, Grazie mille Maurizio!
also, Gorilla Film Magazine wrote a really cool review of Vovô which you can read HERE
Been a while…been busy, very busy…that’s a lot of B’s.
College has started and I’m back in education after a year away from it. It feels good! I’m not sure how frequent my posts will be now that I’m studying but I will try and upload work I do and any more news as much as possible…theres a few things happening already…
Firstly Vovô and Los Artistas were screened in West London last week as part of East Pop West showing work by East London artists and filmmakers. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend….told you I’ve been busy.
Also, Vovô will be showing in the Baltics at Animated Dreams in Estonia.
later this month I’ll be back in Germany, this time at DOK Leipzig with the RCA, but also, Vovô is showing in the Animadoc category. I’ll be present for a Q&A after the screening at 17:00 on the 20th. If you’re there, say hello!
I’ve done some life drawing this week but they’re all on massive A1 sheets of paper so when I have some time I will photograph some and put them up on here. It was the most awesome life drawing lesson ever!
Lastly, I made this as bit of fun –
Last month I did a few bits and bobs of colouring for Eamonn O’Neill’s brilliant first year film from the RCA I’m Fine Thanks, which is now finished and will be premiering in Ottawa in September! Here’s the trailer for it –
Before you read on, I’ve added another completely irrelevant drawing I found from ages ago, it’s pretty haggard, but I quite like it –
On with the news…
Hello. This is a super quick post as it’s late and all…just a tiny bit of news really. Vovô has been selected to be part of Future Shorts ‘ONE – Next Generation Film Festival’ September Programme which will screen throughout the month in various places in various parts of the world…woopeeeeee!
Here’s a list of the countries screening the programme (there’s a few in Asia which means it will make it’s Asian premiere!) –
- Bali (I know this isnt actually a country, but it’s on the list)
Details of all the screenings can be found HERE and all films taking part are HERE.
Bye for now
